Two members of Sri Lanka’s Under-19 national cricket team have been arrested over allegations of secretly filming a woman inside a private hotel in Narahenpita, Colombo, police said.
According to fresh details released by the Narahenpita Police on Thursday, the investigation began after a 119 emergency call on 29 April. The complaint alleged that a woman had been filmed through a bathroom window on 27 April while she was attending a workshop for female doctors at a hotel on Fife Road.
Inquiries led police to two individuals staying in other rooms at the same hotel. The suspects, aged 18 and 19 and resident in Pannala and Kandy, were confirmed as members of Sri Lanka’s Under-19 cricket squad. They had travelled to Colombo for training at the R. Premadasa Stadium and were staying at the hotel with other team members at the time of the incident.
The pair were produced before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court on 29 April and released on personal bail of Rs. 500,000 each. The case has been scheduled for 25 May. Further investigations are continuing.
The arrests land amid a fortnight of upheaval at the senior end of the sport, with SLC President Shammi Silva and the Executive Committee resigning on Monday and a nine-member Transformation Committee chaired by Eran Wickramaratne appointed on Wednesday under direct ministry oversight.
