Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya on Tuesday declared open a newly-equipped High Definition (HD) television studio at the University of Vocational Technology (UoVT) in Ratmalana, aimed at expanding practical training for students.
The studio, fitted with modern technical equipment, was established as part of the university’s media complex to support hands-on learning for students pursuing media and technology-related courses. Several new affiliated centres were also opened at the event, including a broadcasting studio with facilities for a web radio channel, an artificial intelligence research laboratory, and a centre focused on gender, equity and equality.
The Prime Minister also officially launched the university’s “UoVT Greening Policy,” which aims to ensure that all future construction and development within the university is carried out on environmentally sustainable principles. The initiative seeks to transform the institution into a carbon-neutral unit by 2030 while encouraging vocational students to pursue green-sector employment.
In addition, laptops were donated to several schools affected by recent floods and other natural disasters, to support the continuation of students’ education.
The AI laboratory adds to a growing base of applied artificial-intelligence work in Sri Lankan higher education, following milestones such as the sovereign Sinhala large language model developed at the University of Moratuwa.
