Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved a procurement package worth Rs.1,458.75 million for cabs and tractors from United Motors Lanka, Toyota Lanka and DIMO, government spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa said.

The vehicles are intended for the Department of Wildlife Conservation and will be used for wild elephant management and other field duties, Jayatissa told reporters. Bids were invited for 16 double cabs, 84 single cabs and 9 four-wheel tractors, and Cabinet approved awarding each lot to the lowest bidder.

The tender for 16 double cabs was awarded to United Motors Lanka PLC at Rs.300 million, excluding taxes. The contract for 84 single cabs went to Toyota Lanka (Pvt) Ltd at Rs.1,134 million, while Diesel & Motor Engineering PLC (DIMO) secured the 9 four-wheel tractors at Rs.24.75 million.

The Department of Wildlife Conservation has been under operational pressure as the human–elephant conflict has driven wild elephant deaths past 100 in 2026 alone, with field officers stretched across multiple high-conflict zones. The procurement follows a separate Cabinet decision earlier this year that approved electric cars and bikes for the police fleet as part of a wider government vehicle replacement push.
