The Department of Buddhist Affairs has issued a clarification confirming that Vesak Full Moon Poya Day will be observed this year on May 30, formally settling weeks of public debate over the date.

The Department said the decision followed a request from the Mahanayake Theros of the three Nikayas to the President. The prelates had emphasised that the ‘Visa Nakatha’ — the auspicious astrological window that marks the Vesak observance — should fall on the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day itself.

The matter was also discussed at a meeting of the Samastha Lanka Sasanarakshaka Mandalaya held on January 6, 2026, the Department said. It was on that basis that May 30 was proposed as the day of observance, with Vesak Week running from May 27 to June 2.

The clarification ends a public exchange that intensified after senior prelate Kotapitiye Rahula Anunayaka Thero alleged the Vesak date had been shifted for political reasons tied to the May 1 Labour Day calendar. The Department’s statement reframes the move as a clergy-led recommendation routed through the head of state rather than an executive decision.

The May 31 public holiday already gazetted for the Day After Vesak and the state Vesak festival running May 27 to June 2 both align with the May 30 observance. The Education Ministry has issued a circular on Vesak week activities for schools, and the government has separately published Vesak 2026 guidelines aimed at keeping the public observance respectful.
