The Department of Railways will operate several special train services on May 30 and 31 to support travellers attending Vesak observances, Ada Derana reported.
The special trains will serve festival commuters travelling to Anuradhapura — the customary destination for Poya pilgrimages to the ancient sacred sites — and those attending the State Vesak Festival at the Middellawala Purana Raja Maha Viharaya in Thihagoda, Matara, which is the centrepiece of this year’s national celebrations.
The department said the special schedule will run only on May 30 and May 31, the weekend immediately preceding the May 31 Vesak Full Moon Poya holiday. The full timetable has been published by the railways department.
The Vesak Poya falls on Sunday, May 31, with the public holiday gazetted and police coordinating islandwide security for dansal, processions and pilgrim movement.
