The Department of Meteorology has issued a warm weather advisory for Sinhala and Tamil New Year Day, warning that the heat index could reach caution levels across five provinces on April 12.

The advisory covers the Northern, North-Western, Western, Southern and Eastern provinces as well as the Monaragala district. The heat index — the temperature as felt by the human body when humidity is factored in — is expected to rise to uncomfortable levels during daytime hours.

A “caution level” heat index means prolonged outdoor exposure may cause fatigue, and those engaged in physical activity face elevated risk of heat-related discomfort. The warning is particularly relevant as millions of Sri Lankans prepare for traditional Avurudu celebrations that involve extended outdoor activities including traditional games, outdoor cooking, and neighbourhood gatherings.

Safety precautions

Health authorities advise residents to stay hydrated, seek shade during peak afternoon hours, and monitor elderly persons and young children who are more vulnerable to heat stress. Those attending outdoor Avurudu events should carry water and take regular breaks from direct sun exposure.

The advisory was issued at 5:15 PM on Friday and applies specifically to Saturday, April 12. Separate weather advisories earlier this week had also flagged elevated heat conditions in several districts.
