The Kaduwela Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday directed police investigating the May 18 incident near the War Heroes Memorial in Battaramulla to conduct proper investigations and submit a report before formally identifying anyone as a suspect.

Chief Magistrate Arun Indrajith Buddhadasa, after hearing facts presented about the incident, observed that merely presenting names to the court is insufficient — adequate evidence must first be gathered before individuals can be formally named and charged.

Attorney-at-law Kamal Wijesekara, appearing on behalf of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, told the court that his client is prepared to appear voluntarily in connection with the incident. The Magistrate ordered that investigations be completed and a report submitted to the court.

The May 18 incident involved a group that gathered near the Battaramulla memorial, with police alleging that members of the group behaved in a disorderly manner and that a confrontation took place. Police had earlier indicated they intended to seek legal action, and Weerawansa has separately stated he is ready to face any consequences arising from the episode.

Weerawansa is simultaneously facing proceedings in the Fort Magistrate’s Court in Colombo over a 2016 protest-related case and the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court over a firearm-related matter.
