WSO2, the Sri Lanka-rooted open-source enterprise software company, announced that founder Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana will step down as Chief Executive Officer with effect from June 2026, more than two decades after starting the firm.
The Board of Directors has begun a search for a permanent CEO and named Chief Revenue Officer Devaka Randeniya as Acting Chief Executive Officer to lead the company through the transition. WSO2 did not announce a destination role for Weerawarana but said he will join the executive team at WSO2Con North America 2026 in Austin, Texas next week.

Weerawarana described the move as a transition rather than an exit from the company’s mission. “It has been an incredible journey building WSO2 over the past two decades,” he said. “I am proud of what we’ve accomplished and confident in the team and strategy driving the company forward. WSO2’s role in enabling the next generation of AI-driven, agent-based digital experiences is only just beginning.”
Founded in 2005, WSO2 became one of the most internationally visible companies in Sri Lanka’s software sector and a flagship for the country’s engineering talent abroad. Its API, integration and identity platforms are deployed by enterprises and governments globally, and the company has framed its current strategy around becoming the “control plane” for the AI agent and digital integration era — managing how data, identities and AI-driven processes are governed across hybrid environments.
The leadership change comes during a notable cycle for Sri Lankan deep tech, including the University of Moratuwa and Decryptogen IEEE Access publication of a sovereign Sinhala large language model.
