Yakkala Police on Sunday arrested a 60-year-old Gampaha resident identified as a leading fraudster behind multiple foreign employment scams, recovering a fake national identity card and a forged driving licence during the raid in Balummahara, Newswire reported.
The suspect was wanted under open warrants issued by the Marawila Magistrate’s Court in connection with several financial fraud cases. Police said he had deceived job seekers by promising overseas placements and collecting money, before producing forged identity documents to evade earlier arrest and continue the operation.
Officers acted on a tip-off and located the suspect during the special raid. Yakkala Police confirmed that further investigations are underway into the broader operation.
The arrest is the second foreign-employment fraud action in the Western Province in three days, following the Maharagama Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment-led arrest for a separate scheme. The two cases together highlight a continuing enforcement focus on overseas-job fraud, which has been a recurring complaint at parliamentary committees and remained a high-volume category in CID and SLBFE caseloads through 2026.
