The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government will recruit 100 technical officers into the public service on June 15, Minister Professor Chandana Abeyratne said on Thursday.
The intake is aimed at filling a long-standing shortage of technical officers across central and provincial government departments, the Minister said in remarks reported by NewsFirst.
Abeyratne added that appointment letters for 1,600 management assistant officers will be issued on June 30, a separate cohort with broader administrative responsibilities.
The recruitment announcement follows the Central Province technical officers’ strike at Pallekele in May over salary anomalies and acting allowances, which had drawn government commitments to address staffing across the technical-officer grade. Technical officers in Sri Lanka are mid-grade public servants embedded in engineering, agriculture and works ministries, typically holding diplomas from advanced technological institutes or polytechnics, and supporting graded engineers in field implementation.
The 1,600 management assistant recruitment continues the NPP government’s incremental refilling of vacant grades after a multi-year cabinet circular freeze. The Cabinet has approved recruitment frameworks for nurses earlier this year and a phased graduate teacher intake under the teacher recruitment examination of May 25, giving the public-service expansion a multi-cadre trajectory.
