A luxury passenger bus collided with a lorry in the Midiwatta area of Maradankadawala, along the Jaffna-Kandy (A9) main road, on Tuesday, July 21, Ada Derana reported.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of the crash, which disrupted traffic along the busy A9 corridor. Police and rescue teams worked to clear the wreckage and manage the resulting congestion. Details on casualties and the full extent of the damage were still being assessed at the time of reporting.
The A9 highway is one of Sri Lanka’s principal north-south routes, linking Kandy in the central hills to Jaffna in the far north. It carries heavy long-distance passenger buses and freight lorries, and stretches of the road pass through open, high-speed sections where collisions involving heavy vehicles are a recurring road-safety concern.
Motorists were advised to exercise caution and expect delays in the area while recovery operations continued. Authorities did not immediately confirm what caused the two vehicles to collide.
