A revenue inspector attached to a sub-office of the Kotikawatta-Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), Ada Derana reported.
According to the complaint, a person who bought a house in 2018 was told by officials that separate assessment tax payments were required for the upper and lower floors of the property. The inspector allegedly then claimed there were issues with the building plan and demanded a bribe of Rs. 25,000 to resolve the matter and register the assessment tax payments.
The suspect was arrested by CIABOC officers while allegedly accepting the bribe money. He is due to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
The arrest is the latest in a series of sting operations carried out by the anti-bribery commission, which has stepped up action against public officials accused of soliciting illicit payments for routine administrative services. Authorities have encouraged members of the public to report demands for bribes so that offenders can be caught in the act.
