The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has reissued a warrant for the arrest of Jaliya Wickramasuriya, Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador to the United States, Ada Derana reported.
Wickramasuriya has been named as a suspect in a case involving the alleged misappropriation of government funds and has failed to appear before the court on multiple occasions, prompting the fresh warrant.
A cousin of former Presidents Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Wickramasuriya served as Sri Lanka’s envoy in Washington. He has previously faced legal scrutiny both in Sri Lanka and the United States over financial dealings connected to his diplomatic postings, including matters relating to the purchase of a property for the embassy.
His repeated absence from proceedings has stalled the case, and the court’s decision to reissue the warrant signals its intent to compel his appearance. Authorities are expected to take steps to enforce the order.
The case forms part of a broader set of investigations into alleged financial misconduct by officials associated with the former administration, several of which have moved through the courts over the past year.
