Two people were killed and three children were injured when a three-wheeler plunged into Mohini Falls, Ada Derana reported on Wednesday, July 22.
Emergency responders and rescue teams were deployed to the site to carry out recovery operations and to assist those hurt in the accident. The three injured children were being attended to before being taken for treatment, according to the report.
The circumstances that caused the three-wheeler to go over the falls were not immediately clear. Police were expected to investigate how the vehicle came off the road at the site.
Waterfalls and their access roads are popular with visitors across Sri Lanka’s hill country but can be hazardous, with narrow, wet and steep approaches close to fast-moving water and sheer drops. Accidents at scenic sites are a periodic concern during the holiday and travel season. Authorities regularly urge motorists and sightseers to exercise caution near waterfalls, viewpoints and cliff edges, particularly when carrying children.
