A man escaped an attempt on his life in Mount Lavinia after the firearm used by his attackers failed to discharge, police said.
The incident took place at around 10.30 p.m. on Monday (July 21) at a house on Templers Road, where the victim was watching television on the upper floor of his home. According to police, two unidentified men approached him and asked whether he was βChaminda,β before attempting to shoot him with what is believed to have been a pistol. The weapon reportedly malfunctioned and did not fire.
During the confrontation, the victim kicked one of the suspects and was struck on the head with a chair by the other assailant, sustaining minor injuries. He then escaped and sought shelter at the home of a nearby acquaintance. Police said the two suspects followed him there, knocked on the door and fled the area shortly afterwards.
Investigators said the motive behind the attempted shooting has not yet been established. Police are continuing inquiries to trace and identify the suspects.
