Pinnawala Zoo has opened a public competition to name its three fishing cat cubs, inviting animal lovers across Sri Lanka to suggest names for the young felines, Daily Mirror reported.
The drive is tied to World Cat Day, which falls on August 8. The zoo said a judging panel would select the best suggestions, with the winners to receive special prizes during the World Cat Day celebrations.
Entries can be submitted through an online form shared by the zoo and close on August 7, according to the report. Officials called on families, wildlife enthusiasts and visitors to take part and help choose names suited to each cub’s personality.
The fishing cat is a rare, medium-sized wild cat native to Sri Lanka’s wetlands and a strong swimmer that hunts in marshes and waterways. With the species considered threatened by the loss of its habitat, the zoo said the naming initiative was also intended to draw public attention to the animal and its conservation.
