The Court of Appeal today (23) dismissed a writ petition seeking to postpone the 2026 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination by two months, declining to take the application up for hearing, Ada Derana reported.
The petition had been filed by a group of students who asked the court to order authorities to push back the examination, which is scheduled to be held next month. NewsFirst and Daily Mirror separately confirmed the ruling.
By refusing to entertain the writ, the court has effectively cleared the way for the examination to proceed on schedule, ending uncertainty for candidates and schools preparing for the sitting.
The decision follows an earlier position taken by the Department of Examinations and the Education Ministry, which had already rejected calls to defer the A/L examination. Officials have maintained that repeated postponements disrupt the academic calendar and delay university admissions for successful candidates.
Advanced Level results determine placement in Sri Lanka’s state university system, and any delay to the examination has knock-on effects for the entire higher-education intake cycle. Education authorities are expected to confirm the final timetable and centre arrangements in the coming days as candidates finalise their preparations.
