More than 100 kilograms of seized narcotics, including a large consignment of heroin, are scheduled to be destroyed following the completion of the related court proceedings, Ada Derana reported.
The destruction covers contraband for which judicial processes have concluded, allowing the material to be disposed of under the supervision of the relevant authorities. Destroying seized drugs once cases are closed is a standard procedure aimed at ensuring that confiscated narcotics do not re-enter circulation.
The move forms part of Sri Lanka’s continuing enforcement effort against drug trafficking, which has seen intensified operations by police, the Police Narcotics Bureau, the Special Task Force and Customs in recent months. Large quantities of heroin, methamphetamine (“ice”) and other substances have been intercepted at sea, at the airport and in raids across the country.
Officials have said the accumulation of seized narcotics held as court productions creates storage and security challenges, making periodic court-sanctioned destruction necessary. Previous disposals have been carried out at high-temperature industrial incinerators under tight security and judicial oversight.
Authorities have repeatedly stressed that dismantling trafficking networks and cutting the domestic supply of narcotics remain among their top law-enforcement priorities.
