A high-level business delegation from the National Association of Builders (NOSTROY) of the Russian Federation has visited Sri Lanka to explore opportunities for cooperation in the construction and infrastructure sectors.
According to Ada Derana, the visit took place from July 22 to 25 and was facilitated by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation. The delegation’s programme was aimed at strengthening bilateral economic ties and identifying areas where Russian expertise and investment could support Sri Lankan projects.
NOSTROY is one of Russia’s principal self-regulatory bodies for the construction industry, representing a large network of builders and contractors. Its engagement with Sri Lankan counterparts signals interest in expanding commercial links between the two countries in a sector central to the island’s post-crisis recovery and development plans.
Sri Lanka has been seeking foreign investment and technical partnerships to revive stalled infrastructure work and modernise its building sector as the economy stabilises. Officials have pursued a diversified set of international partners for such projects in recent years.
The delegation’s discussions were expected to cover potential joint ventures, technology transfer and knowledge-sharing. Further details on any agreements or follow-up steps arising from the visit were not immediately announced, but both sides signalled interest in continued engagement.
In a follow-up on July 27, Ada Derana reported that Sri Lankan skilled and semi-skilled workers are set to gain expanded employment opportunities in Russia’s construction sector following discussions between the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and NOSTROY. The talks are expected to open a formal channel for placing Sri Lankan labour on Russian building projects, adding a foreign-employment dimension to the wider construction-sector cooperation the two sides have been pursuing.
