The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and the Police Special Task Force (STF) have seized a stock of expired fertilizer that had allegedly been secretly stored in lorries by a business in the Bomiriya area of Kaduwela, according to NewsFirst and the Daily Mirror.
Officials recovered 376 kilograms of expired solid fertilizer and 1,170 litres of expired liquid fertilizer during the operation. The Daily Mirror reported that the raid was carried out by the CAA together with the STF’s Special Operations Unit No. 01 on the evening of July 21.
The seized stock has been taken into the custody of the Consumer Affairs Authority and sealed while investigations continue. The Authority said legal action would be instituted against the business concerned once inquiries are completed.
The CAA urged consumers and farmers to report traders who mislead the public by selling expired or substandard goods, directing complaints to its hotline on 1977.
The seizure comes as regulators intensify raids on warehouses and distributors stocking expired agricultural inputs, which authorities warn can damage crops and defraud farmers who pay for products no longer fit for use.
