The body of a 17-year-old girl who had been reported missing has been found in a quarry in the Kajuwatta area of Mahawalathenna, Balangoda, police said.
According to police, the teenager — a resident of Mahawalathenna — had been missing since July 23. Her father had lodged a complaint with the Balangoda Police over her disappearance, prompting a search that led to the discovery of the body in the disused quarry.
Police said it has not yet been determined whether the death was the result of murder, suicide or drowning. A post-mortem examination was scheduled to be conducted at the Balangoda Base Hospital to establish the cause of death, officials said.
Investigators have begun questioning residents and gathering information as they work to reconstruct the girl’s movements after she was last seen. The Balangoda Police are continuing inquiries into the case.
Authorities have not released further details, citing the ongoing investigation and the fact that the deceased is a minor. Police said additional information would be made available once the post-mortem findings and forensic examinations are complete.
