A Chief Inspector of Police serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Special Investigation Unit of the Homagama Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Division has been arrested over hit-and-run incidents that injured two women, according to Ada Derana and NewsFirst.
The officer was taken into custody by Meegoda Police over allegations that two young women were struck by his vehicle before he fled the scene. Ada Derana reported that the incidents occurred on the High-Level Road near the Meegoda fuel station and near the 20th Mile Post at Watareka, between 11.30 p.m. and 11.57 p.m. on Friday (July 25).
NewsFirst reported that the two women had been travelling on a motorcycle at the time. A medical examination was being carried out to determine whether the officer was under the influence of alcohol.
The suspect was scheduled to be produced before the Homagama Magistrate’s Court on Saturday (July 26). Investigations are continuing.
The arrest of a serving senior officer over a road accident is likely to draw scrutiny of police accountability, coming amid repeated calls for stricter action against hit-and-run drivers on the country’s roads.
