The Chief Executive Officer of Electricity Generation Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Engineer Saliya Panditharatne, was scheduled to appear before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into coal transactions on Monday to give evidence.
A Deputy Auditor General representing the Auditor General’s Department was also expected to testify. The commission was due to convene at 1.00 p.m. to continue recording evidence.
The commission, headed by Supreme Court Justice Gihan Kulatunga, was appointed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to investigate all coal transactions carried out in Sri Lanka.
Its work has centred on the procurement and supply arrangements behind coal shipments for power generation, with officials from state institutions and private suppliers summoned in sequence to record statements. The involvement of the Auditor General’s Department reflects the commission’s focus on the financial trail attached to those transactions.
Coal remains central to Sri Lanka’s electricity mix, and the commission’s findings are expected to bear on how future procurement is structured.
