Priyalal Bandula Preethi Jayawardena, owner of a well-known garment retail establishment, has been further remanded until August 6 by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
The order was issued by Colombo Additional Magistrate Oshada Migara Mahaarachchi after rejecting a bail application filed on behalf of the suspect.
During proceedings, the defence argued that the complaint against Jayawardena could not be legally maintained. The magistrate ruled the objections were without merit and rejected the request to invalidate the complaint.
The court also dismissed a defence application seeking the suspect’s release under Section 115 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, holding that the facts presented by the complainant established sufficient grounds for a judicial inquiry and further legal proceedings.
Jayawardena was arrested over allegations that he violated the Customs Ordinance by importing goods valued at more than Rs. 1 million.
The case is due to be taken up again on August 6.
