The Department of Railways has announced temporary restrictions on train services along the Kelani Valley line and the closure of the Nawala–Narahenpita railway crossing to allow renovation work to be carried out.
According to the Department, the measures are needed to facilitate urgent repairs at the Nawala–Narahenpita road railway crossing, which is located between the Narahenpita and Nugegoda railway stations.
Train services between Colombo Fort and Nugegoda on the Kelani Valley line will be suspended from 7.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, while the work is under way.
The Railway Department said revised timetables will apply to services operating on the Kelani Valley line on Saturday evening and on Sunday morning, once the crossing reopens and normal running resumes.
Passengers have been advised to take note of the temporary changes and to make alternative travel arrangements for the day.
The Kelani Valley line runs from Colombo Fort out through the capital’s south-eastern suburbs. The August 1 shutdown falls on a Saturday, sparing weekday commuters, but passengers travelling between Colombo Fort and Nugegoda that day will need to rely on road transport for the bulk of daytime hours.
The Department did not say how long the crossing itself would remain closed to road traffic, or give a cost for the renovation.
