Police have arrested a woman in connection with the attempted murder of a man at a house in Mount Lavinia earlier this month, saying she supplied the firearm used in the failed attack.
The arrest was made by the Western Province South Crime Division, Ada Derana reported. Investigators said the woman aided and abetted the shooting attempt, and that CCTV footage captured her handing the weapon to the gunman on a motorcycle.
She was also found in possession of the narcotic ‘Ice’, or crystal methamphetamine, at the time of her arrest, police said.
The incident took place on the night of July 21 at a residence on Temple Road — referred to in earlier police accounts as Templers Road — when two men arrived on a scooter. At around 10.30 p.m., while the intended target was watching television on the upper floor of his home, one of the men approached him and asked whether he was “Chaminda” before attempting to open fire.
The attempt failed when the firearm malfunctioned and did not discharge. In the confrontation that followed, the victim kicked one of the men and was struck on the head with a chair by the other, sustaining minor injuries before escaping to a neighbour’s house. The two suspects followed him there, knocked on the door and then fled.
No motive had been established when the case was first reported, and police said at the time that the two gunmen had not been identified. The arrest is the first announced in the case.
Investigations are continuing.
