Veteran lyricist Rathna Sri Wijesinghe has resigned as Chairman of the National Library and Documentation Services Board, the Daily Mirror reported.
Wijesinghe said the decision was based solely on personal reasons, particularly his age, and was not the result of any loss of confidence in the President or the government.
The resignation takes effect from August 11.
Wijesinghe is one of Sri Lanka’s most widely recognised figures in literature and music, known chiefly as a lyricist whose songs have been performed by leading Sri Lankan vocalists over several decades. He also has a long record as a poet and writer.
The National Library and Documentation Services Board is the statutory body responsible for the National Library of Sri Lanka and for coordinating library services and documentation policy across the country. It functions under the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.
No successor had been named at the time of reporting, and the government has not commented publicly on the resignation.
