A 34-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Mirissa area on Friday (31), police said.
Two unidentified people who arrived on a motorcycle opened fire before fleeing the scene, according to police. Hiru News reported that the shooting took place near the Mirissa junction.
The Police Media Spokesman’s Office identified the injured man as the skipper of a fishing vessel. He was admitted to the Matara District General Hospital for treatment.
Police believe a revolver-type firearm was used. The motive for the attack had not been established at the time of reporting, and no arrests were announced.
Mirissa, on the southern coast in the Matara District, is both a working fishing harbour and one of Sri Lanka’s better-known tourist towns, drawing visitors for whale watching and beach tourism.
Police did not say whether the shooting was linked to any dispute within the fisheries sector, and had not commented on whether the victim was specifically targeted.
