Twenty-six retired police dogs attached to the Asgiriya Police Kennel Division in Kandy will be auctioned to the public on August 1, police said.
The dogs served the Police Department in detecting explosives and narcotics and in assisting criminal investigations.
Prospective buyers will be able to inspect the animals before bidding. The public inspection runs from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. on the day of the auction at the grounds of the Asgiriya Police Kennel Division, with bidding to begin once the inspection period closes.
Police did not disclose reserve prices, the breeds or ages of the dogs on offer, or any conditions attached to their rehoming.
Sri Lanka Police periodically auction working dogs that have reached the end of their service life, a common practice among police and military kennel units internationally. Retired detection dogs are typically rehomed with private owners, and are often taken by former handlers or by families familiar with the demands of keeping a trained working animal.
The Asgiriya kennel division is one of the Police Department’s main canine facilities, supplying dogs for bomb disposal, narcotics detection and crime scene work across the Central Province and beyond.
