Six suspects have been arrested by the Crimes Prevention Unit of the Mount Lavinia Police in the Gona Kowila area of Rathmalana, along with three swords, three knives, a locally manufactured hand grenade and other sharp weapons, Ada Derana reported.
Police also recovered Rs. 300,000 in cash, suspected to be proceeds of drug trafficking, and eight mobile phones from the suspects.
How the raid came about
The arrests followed the earlier detention of a man found with 1,000 milligrams of crystal methamphetamine, known locally as ice, by an officer attached to the Special Motorcycle Unit of the Mount Lavinia Police in the Arthur Place area of Rathmalana.
Under questioning, that suspect gave information about where the drugs had been obtained, leading officers to a house allegedly used as a distribution point. Police then carried out a search of the premises, during which the weapons and cash were recovered.
The main suspect is 29 years old. The others are aged 33, 22, 24, 51 and 36, and are residents of Rathmalana, Nawalapitiya and Eheliyagoda.
The suspects are to be produced before a magistrate, after which police are expected to seek detention orders for further investigation.
The seizure of an improvised grenade alongside narcotics and cash follows a series of incidents in the Mount Lavinia division, where police have deployed special teams after a run of shootings linked to organised crime groups.
