The government has not increased the salaries of Members of Parliament by any amount, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said on Tuesday.
Responding to a question at the weekly Cabinet media briefing, the minister said recent claims of a pay rise for MPs stemmed from adjustments to the fuel allowance provided to parliamentarians and government officials.
He said no salary increase of Rs. 50,000, Rs. 60,000, Rs. 100,000 or any other amount had been granted to MPs.
How the allowance is calculated
MPs and government officials are entitled to a specified fuel allocation, with the corresponding allowance calculated according to the prevailing fuel price, Jayatissa explained.
After fuel prices rose from March 2026, the government continued to calculate the allowance using the price applicable on 1 March 2026, rather than applying the subsequent increases.
That circular remained in effect until 1 July. From then on, the allowance has been calculated on the market fuel price prevailing at the time — meaning the amount can rise when fuel prices go up and fall when they come down.
Jayatissa reiterated that the additional sum appearing in payments to MPs was an adjustment to the fuel allowance and not an increase in their salaries.
