A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Digana on suspicion of possessing a foreign-manufactured live hand grenade along with crystal methamphetamine and other weapons, police said.
Officers from the Teldeniya Police Station detained the suspect during a raid on Tuesday evening acting on information received, Ada Derana reported.
Police said 5,155 milligrams of crystal methamphetamine, known locally as βIce,β and Rs. 63,000 in cash were seized at the time of the arrest. The money is suspected of being proceeds of drug trafficking.
Investigators subsequently searched the suspectβs home on the basis of information he provided. There they found a foreign-made live hand grenade, a further 1,250 milligrams of Ice, two swords and a pointed knife, all allegedly concealed inside the house.
The suspect, a resident of Digana, has been detained for questioning. Teldeniya police are continuing the investigation.
Police did not say what type of grenade was recovered, how it was obtained, or whether the suspect is linked to any organised group. No court date has been reported.
