Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department in Colombo on Wednesday morning to provide a statement, three newsrooms reported.
The Daily Mirror said he attended “in connection with an ongoing investigation.” Ada Derana reported that he appeared before the CID “pertaining to ongoing investigations.” Hiru News carried the same account in Sinhala.
None of the three reports identified which investigation the summons concerns, and no outlet reported the outcome of the questioning or whether any further step followed.
What is not yet known
Rajapaksa is a party to several separate proceedings, and the reports published so far do not indicate which — if any — of them prompted Wednesday’s appearance. LankaNewz is not attributing the visit to a particular case in the absence of that detail.
His existing matters include a money laundering trial before the Colombo High Court, in which the Attorney General opposed an application to suspend proceedings last month, and a separate Bribery Commission case in which he and former Navy commander Wasantha Karannagoda were indicted this month over a 2006 Royal Navy training course. The Court of Appeal dismissed a revision petition connected to the money laundering case in July.
Appearing before an investigating agency to give a statement does not imply arrest or the filing of charges. None of the allegations in the matters listed above has been proven.
