A police sergeant attached to the Hambegamuwa Police Station was killed when his motorcycle overturned in the Arambekema area along the Thanamalwila–Hambegamuwa road on Friday, Hiru News reported, citing Thanamalwila Police.

Police said the motorcycle was travelling towards Thanamalwila when it veered off the road and overturned. No other vehicle was described as involved.

The officer was identified as a 43-year-old resident of Gaminipura, Thanamalwila. His body was placed in the Monaragala Hospital mortuary.

Thanamalwila Police are conducting further investigations.

Not reported

Hiru did not name the officer, give the time of the crash, or say whether road conditions, mechanical failure or any other factor is being examined as a cause. It did not report whether the sergeant was on duty at the time. No other verified newsroom had filed on the incident at the time of writing.

Care is needed in reading search results for this story: two separate fatal crashes involving police sergeants in the same region surface alongside it — a Wellawaya road death in which an army bus collided head-on with a motorcycle, and a Vavuniya motorcycle crash. Neither is this incident.
