Cabinet has approved a five-year research collaboration between Germany’s Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and Uva Wellassa University, Hiru News reported.
The project is titled “Spatio Coexistence – Towards a Spatial Coexistence Theory for Species Rich Communities”. It aims to develop a new body of spatial ecological theory covering biodiversity, plant communities and ecosystem dynamics.
Sri Lanka’s role is as subcontractor
Under the agreement, Uva Wellassa University has been selected as a specialist subcontractor responsible for carrying out scientific research and supplying ecological datasets. It will receive up to 50,000 euros across the five years for that work.
The framing matters. This is not a jointly funded research programme between two states but a German-led project buying in Sri Lankan field expertise and data — which is also why the sum is modest relative to the length of the commitment.
Beyond the funding, the ministry expects the partnership to open knowledge exchange, give Sri Lankan researchers access to modern scientific methods, build local capacity and produce joint scientific publications.
Why Uva Wellassa
Sri Lanka’s value to a project on species-rich communities is its ecology rather than its laboratories. The island is a recognised biodiversity hotspot, and Uva Wellassa — based in Badulla, in the Uva highlands — sits close to the montane and dry-zone transitions that make the country useful as a study system.
Cabinet granted the approval on a proposal submitted by the Prime Minister in her capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.
