Two employees of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka arrested with narcotics have been remanded until September 16 by the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court, Hiru News reported.
The arrests were made near the mortuary of the hospital’s Emergency Unit following information received by Maradana Police. The suspects, aged 34 and 37, are residents of the Mahiyanganaya and Polonnaruwa areas. One is a mortuary employee.
Police said the pair were detained while holding drugs obtained from the Borella–Wanathamulla area for sale.
A prolonged operation, investigators say
Investigations found the two had been selling drugs to hospital staff and to people outside the hospital over an extended period, according to the report. A judicial medical examination found both men to be severely addicted.
National Hospital Director Dr. Sampath Indika Kumara said steps would be taken to suspend the two employees.
The report did not specify the type or quantity of narcotics recovered, name the suspects, or say what charges have been filed. Hiru News was the only verified newsroom to carry the case.
