The body of a man has been found floating in the Kelani River at Jalthara, Hanwella, NewsFirst reported.
Police said the body was recovered after information was received from local residents.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed. Hanwella Police are conducting further investigations.
No cause of death has been given, and police have not said how long the body may have been in the water or whether the death is being treated as suspicious. A post-mortem examination would normally follow before either question is answered publicly.
The stretch of river
Jalthara sits on the Kelani in the Hanwella police division, in the Colombo District’s eastern reaches, where the river runs between Avissawella and Kaduwela before continuing towards Colombo.
Drownings and recoveries along the Kelani are reported through the year, most often at bathing spots. In late August, police divers searched for two days at Pokunugoda, Mulleriyawa, some 25 kilometres downstream, after a 26-year-old man went missing while bathing. There is no reported connection between that case and the recovery at Jalthara, and the two locations lie in opposite directions along the river’s flow.
