The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recovered 145 rounds of T-56 ammunition and a pair of handcuffs concealed in the Thuna-Andhena area of Malabe, Hiru News reported.
Investigators found that the items had been hidden on the instructions of an overseas-based organised crime figure known as “Battaramulle Bunty”, and that they were being kept for a planned crime.
Hiru News said the CID is continuing its investigation. It did not report whether anyone has been arrested, when the cache was placed, what the intended target was, or whether a firearm to fire the rounds has been recovered — 145 rounds without a weapon is a supply cache rather than a ready one.
The presence of handcuffs alongside the ammunition points to a planned abduction or an impersonation of police officers, though the report does not say which. Neither the Daily Mirror nor NewsFirst carried the story on Thursday evening.
The recovery follows a pattern of caches attributed to crime figures directing operations from abroad. The CID has not said where “Battaramulle Bunty” is believed to be, whether an extradition request or Interpol notice exists, or how the instructions were communicated.
