A man was critically injured in a shooting in the Panwila area of Rathgama, Galle, on Monday evening, Hiru News reported shortly after the attack.
The victim was admitted to the Galle National Hospital for urgent treatment.
Police said the attack arose from a clash between two rival underworld groups. Investigating officers said the assailants discharged six T-56 rounds during the shooting.

The Panwila in this case is a locality within Rathgama, in the Galle district on the southern coast — not the town of the same name in the Kandy district.
The second shooting in the district in two days
The attack follows a fatal shooting at Halpathota, Baddegama on Sunday, also in the Galle district. Police have linked that earlier attack to an underworld dispute as well, though no source has stated that the two incidents are connected, and LankaNewz is not asserting a link between them.
The Galle district has drawn repeated police attention over organised crime this year. In July, courts froze assets tied to a Rathgama underworld figure as part of a wider action against gang finances.
