A newly built computer training centre and an upgraded library at the Muwadora Uyana apartment complex in north Colombo were handed over to children living there on September 28 by Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake.
The project was carried out under the guidance of the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development. It covered the refurbishment of the existing Akura library and the construction of a new computer training facility on the ground floor of the Urban Development Authority housing complex.
The facilities were set up by the Social Animation Division of the Urban Settlement Development Authority, which will also maintain them.
The handover ceremony featured performances by the Peace Children’s Club, made up of young residents of the complex.
Muwadora Uyana is one of the state-built apartment schemes managed under the UDA’s urban housing programme in Colombo. Shared facilities of this kind are intended to give children in such complexes access to computers and study space at the building itself.
The opening comes as the government pushes digital skills further down the school system. The Cabinet on Monday approved the extension of the new curriculum to Grades 2 and 6 from 2027, and the Prime Minister has repeatedly linked digital literacy among schoolchildren to the country’s longer-term economic plans.
