LAUGFS Holdings has appointed Dhanusha Muthukumarana as Group Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer with effect from 1 October, EconomyNext reported.
The company said the appointment “reflects the Group’s focus on strengthening leadership, accelerating business transformation and driving sustainable growth across its diversified portfolio.”
Not an outside hire
Muthukumarana is being elevated from within. He was appointed to the board of LAUGFS Gas PLC as a non-independent director in March, at which point the group described him as Group Executive Director of LAUGFS Holdings.
The company statement carried by EconomyNext does not mention that prior role, and does not name an outgoing Group MD/CEO or say why the position changed hands.
Background
Muthukumarana is a technology executive rather than an energy or retail one. The group cites more than 26 years across banking and finance, consumer goods, manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, enterprise software and technology consulting, and describes senior roles at Fortune 500 companies.
The March announcement was more specific about which companies. It listed:
- London Stock Exchange Group — founded and led the Enterprise Architecture Practice in the Technology Services Division, serving as Chief Enterprise Architect for banking, financial services and insurance
- Hatton National Bank — head of enterprise software and IT strategic projects
- Hemas Holdings — Group Head of Information Technology
- Microsoft — enterprise technology specialist, Southeast Asia New Markets
- John Keells Holdings — senior technology roles
He is an executive education alumnus of the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School in strategic innovation, holds an MBA from the Postgraduate Institute of Management at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and has postgraduate qualifications in IT. Echelon magazine named him among Sri Lanka’s top 100 next-generation business leaders in 2019, and he was the first Sri Lankan inducted into the Forbes Technology Council, in 2021.
One detail differs between the two accounts: the company now says he is pursuing postgraduate studies in economics, while the March announcement specified financial economics at the University of Colombo.
The group
Founded in 1995 as Gas Auto Lanka, LAUGFS has grown into one of Sri Lanka’s larger diversified groups, operating across more than 20 industries and employing over 3,500 people globally. Its interests span oil and gas, renewable energy, industrial and engineering, logistics, retail and consumer, healthcare and services, with operations outside Sri Lanka.
The group’s listed gas arm has featured in our earlier coverage of LPG distribution and of its 2MW mini-hydro plant at Ginigathhena.
Sourcing note
Most of the biographical material above originates in LAUGFS’s own statement rather than independent reporting, and is presented as the company’s account. No other verified newsroom had filed on the appointment at the time of writing. The March board announcement is linked for context only; it is six months old and is not cited as a source for today’s appointment.
