A 47-year-old man from Balapitiya has died from injuries sustained in a sharp-weapon attack in Ambalangoda, police said.
Ambalangoda Police opened an investigation after being notified that the victim had succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Ambalangoda Hospital.
Preliminary inquiries indicate the assault occurred on the afternoon of May 8 after a dispute between the victim and another individual escalated into violence. The assailant struck the man with a sharp weapon before fleeing the scene.
The suspect remains at large. Police investigations are continuing to identify and apprehend him.
The Ambalangoda Police Division covers a stretch of the southern coast that has recorded several violent incidents in recent weeks. A separate sharp-weapon murder was reported in Pitigala on May 8, where a 60-year-old man was stabbed to death in Horangalla; the suspect later turned himself in at Aluthgama Hospital. The same day, an 88-year-old woman was killed in Tissamaharama by unidentified suspects.
Balapitiya itself has featured in several recent crime stories. Police arrested a suspect known as “Loku Pattie” in early May after recovering a pistol and narcotics in a separate operation.
Police have not released the identity of the deceased or details of the dispute that led to the attack.
