A member of the Ambalangoda Pradeshiya Sabha representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has been remanded until July 24 over the alleged illegal possession of a firearm.
The order was made by the Balapitiya Magistrate’s Court on Monday (July 13), after the suspect was produced before Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeevani. The councillor had been arrested on July 11 by the Galle District Crimes Division, which alleged he was in possession of a repeater-type firearm without a valid licence.
The suspect was not named in official reports. The SJB, led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, is the country’s main opposition party and holds seats in local councils across the Southern Province, including Ambalangoda.
The case is the latest in a series of police operations targeting unlicensed weapons in the Galle District. The court is expected to take up the matter again when the remand period ends on July 24.
