The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber advisory for strong winds across several provinces, citing the active south-west monsoon condition. The advisory was issued on Wednesday (3) and will remain in effect until 3.30 p.m. on Thursday (4).
Strong winds of about 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North Central provinces and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts, the department said. Fairly strong winds of about 30–40 kmph can be expected at times elsewhere on the island.
The public has been asked to stay attentive to further advisories. The wind alert runs in parallel with the Met Department’s separate warning of heavy showers above 100 mm in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces from June 3, as the south-west monsoon continues to drive intensifying wet-zone weather.
The advisory follows a string of back-to-back rough-seas and strong-wind warnings issued at the end of May, including Amber advisories on May 29 and May 31, and earlier heavy-rain alerts above 100 mm across eight districts.
