A 54-year-old Angolan woman has been arrested by the Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country by concealing the drug inside her body, according to Ada Derana.
The suspect arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on July 17 aboard Qatar Airways flight QR654, travelling from Angola via Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and Doha. She was reportedly using a wheelchair on arrival.
According to Customs, the woman voluntarily surrendered 14 capsules of cocaine that had been concealed internally. She also admitted to investigators that she had swallowed further capsules containing the narcotic.
NewsFirst reported that the consignment was valued at around Rs. 10 million. The arrest came shortly before Customs detained a 23-year-old Malaysian national at the same airport with a larger cocaine haul, in a separate operation. Investigations into both cases are continuing.
