Two men were killed and a pregnant woman was critically injured in an early-morning collision between a motorcycle and a school bus in Anuradhapura on Wednesday (July 15), police said.

The crash occurred in the Mihindupura area, along the Anuradhapura–Medawachchiya road near the Isurumuniya Clock Tower Junction, when the motorcycle collided with a “Sisu Seriya” bus that was transporting schoolchildren. Three people — two men and a woman — were travelling on the motorcycle at the time.

Both men, reported to be 27 years old and from the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa areas, died at the scene. The injured woman, who is pregnant, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital with multiple injuries.

Police said initial investigations indicated that one of the dead men and the injured woman had travelled from Polonnaruwa to visit a friend’s home and were riding with a third companion when the collision occurred.

The driver of the school bus has been arrested, and the Anuradhapura Traffic Police are conducting further investigations into the cause of the accident.
