Construction of the Anuradhapura South Multi-Modal Transport Centre is nearing completion after work resumed in 2024 following delays caused by Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, the Ministry of Urban Development has confirmed.
The project, located in Anuradhapura city, has an estimated cost of Rs. 2,144 million. It was halted midway during the crisis and is now being driven to finish under the Ministry of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development.
The hub will feature two main terminals: a “Touch & Go” section for through-route passengers boarding and alighting from buses passing through the city, and a central bus stand. The new Anuradhapura railway station will be integrated into the complex via a secure overhead bridge, with upper floors of the station housing passenger rest rooms, accommodation, and a taxi access deck. The bus stand’s upper floor will hold two commercial areas and a restaurant.
Construction is being carried out by a private contractor with engineering consultancy from the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB). Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekera recently inspected the site to review progress.
The facility is one of several transport infrastructure projects the NPP government has reactivated since taking office, alongside a Werahera vehicle number-plate printing facility relaunch this week and continuing work on regional expressways. Anuradhapura is the cultural and administrative capital of the North Central Province and serves as a major junction between Colombo, Jaffna, and Trincomalee corridors.
