Twenty students were hospitalised on Thursday after a swarm of wasps attacked a school in the Aralaganwila area of Dimbulagala, NewsFirst reported.
The affected students were from Grades 6 to 13. They were rushed to the Aralaganwila Divisional Hospital for treatment immediately after the incident, school sources said. None of the injuries have been reported as life-threatening.
Aralaganwila lies in the Dimbulagala Divisional Secretariat of the Polonnaruwa District. Wasp swarms are a recurring hazard at schools located close to scrubland and dry-zone forest cover during the early south-west monsoon season, when nests are most active.
The incident is the second mass school casualty event reported on the site in recent weeks, following a Bogawantalawa bus accident in which 34 schoolchildren were injured. The Polonnaruwa District also recorded a fatal van-elephant collision earlier this week.
