India’s decision to name a near full-strength squad for the 2026 Asian Games cricket competition has thrown a spotlight on a scheduling problem facing Sri Lanka, whose top players are expected to be unavailable for much of the tournament because of a clashing white-ball tour of England, Newswire reported on Saturday.
The Asian Games men’s cricket competition in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, is scheduled to be played from September 24 to October 3. Sri Lanka’s white-ball assignment in England runs across the same window, with three One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals slated for late September and early October.
Because the country’s leading cricketers feature regularly in both the 50-over and 20-over formats, the overlap is likely to prevent Sri Lanka from naming a top-strength squad for the Asian Games. Sri Lanka’s T20I series in England is expected to conclude before the latter stages of the Asian Games, potentially allowing a handful of T20 specialists to join the squad in Japan, but the report said such a scenario looks unlikely given the significant overlap between the country’s ODI and T20I player pools.
India, by contrast, are sending a strong squad, underlining the importance the BCCI places on the tournament as cricket continues its push toward inclusion at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Asian Games competition will feature several of the region’s top cricketing nations, and Sri Lanka may have to rely on a second-string side unless changes are made to the international schedule.
The England series itself comes against the backdrop of the ECB’s broader scheduling review, which has weighed reducing future tours of Sri Lanka to a single Test alongside white-ball fixtures in the next Future Tours Programme cycle.
