Sri Lanka’s Welfare Benefits Board has begun releasing the July round of Aswesuma cash grants, disbursing a total of Rs. 11.83 billion to eligible low-income families, according to Ada Derana.
The Board said the payments would be credited directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts on Tuesday (July 15), continuing the programme’s regular monthly cycle of income support.
Aswesuma is the government’s flagship social safety net, replacing the older Samurdhi scheme and delivering means-tested monthly transfers to hundreds of thousands of households across the island. Eligibility is determined through a nationwide targeting exercise intended to direct assistance to families that genuinely qualify.
The July disbursement follows the phased restart of the scheme earlier this year, when the Board confirmed that first-round payments would resume in July after a beneficiary verification survey. Officials have repeatedly stressed that the survey process is designed to remove ineligible recipients and ensure the limited welfare budget reaches the most vulnerable.
The transfers arrive as many recipient households continue to face elevated living costs, keeping the timeliness of the monthly Aswesuma payments closely watched by beneficiaries.
